Beginner workshops will cover the three main footwork patterns of Lindy Hop and the basics of the fundamental Lindy Hop moves. If you want to get dancing quickly or if you want to re-cover the basics then this is the workshop for you.

Improver level will cover many of the fundamental moves of Lindy Hop with some added extras to spice things up a bit.

If you've been to improver lessons for a while and want to push your Lindy Hop into intermediate level you are welcome at the intermediate workshops. Please don't feel daunted, the classes will be challenging but managable for both new and existing intermediate level dancers. Guests are free to attend one or both intermediate classes.

Understanding ‘Levels’

BEGINNERS: For the complete newbie.
Core Themes
- Beginners are introduced to 8 count footwork and some basic 8 count moves including: basic in partner hold, 8 count out to open, 8 count back to closed, lindy circles, lindy turns and the basics of a swing out
- Beginners are also introduced to 6 count footwork and some basic 6 count moves including: basic in partner hold, tuck turns, 6 count out to open, 6 count pass, the sugar push and 6 count back to closed
- Beginners are also introduced to basic Charleston footwork and the side by side Charleston

We teach beginners classes in a seven week sequence as follows: Charleston, 6 Count, 6 Count, Charleston, 8 Count, 8 Count, 8 Count. You should be able to start any week and we'd expect that you would have to complete this sequence a couple of times at least before moving up to Improver level.

IMPROVERS: The next step forward
You've taken several months of classes, covering fundamental 6 count moves, (tuck turn, 6 count pass, sugar push etc), fundamental 8 count moves, (lindy circle, swing out, back to closed), and basic charleston steps. You now want to learn a bit more and have some fun to impress your partner. You are ready to move into improvers when you can competently lead or follow all of the above.

Improvers, you should be aiming to:
Consolidate your competency in all the ‘core’ beginner themes.
Develop in 3 core improver elements
1. Awareness of self
2. Awareness of your partner
3. Awareness of ‘outside’ elements e.g. dancefloor craft, musicality, rhythm

Improvers Course objectives.
In order to progress to the intermediate level, dancers should:
1. Be able to lead/ follow key moves which include: The tuck turn, The sugar push, The Lindy Circle, The Swing out, Inside/Outside turns, Texas Tommy, Charleston variations (side by side, hand to hand, tandem)
2. Be able to demonstrate basic points of technique including posture, connection and dancefloor craft.
3. Be able to lead/ follow a mixture of 6 count and 8 count moves
4. Be aware of and have a developing sense of musicality, rhythm and styling

You have the bug. You social dance regularly, have attended a few workshops and weekly classes for at least a year and have a good appreciation of the fundamental stuff such as Swing outs, Lindy turns, Lindy circle, Texas Tommy, Swivels for followers, with a good measure of moves and charleston variations chucked in, such as Side-by-Side, Tandem and Reverse Charleston. You are able to incorporate rhythm and musicality into your dancing and not just do the steps. Now you wish to build upon your existing repertoire, with some slick variations to spice things up a bit and develop your individual style.

This is where things heat up a little. You have at least two years of Lindy Hop experience, a nice repertoire of moves and Jazz Movement, with possibly a few tricks here and there. You lead or follow reasonably well to slow n faster tempos. You have some musicality and inventiveness but you wish to iron out the creases, dot the i's, cross the t's. You understand the need to go back to the beginning to learn how to do it all so much better now. You're ready to connect and make peace with the floor, your partner and the music.

Hot, Hot, Hot. Vindaloo level. You will have attended various camps around the world and are being recognised by the teachers. You are comfortable with slow grooves or faster tempos. You should have musicality, originality, vitality, speed - ality, ? You can brag about doing a swing out to "sing sing sing", whilst eating noodles and talking to your mum on your mobile! You are used to adding complex and fast Jazz steps to your Lindy Hop, yet you are focused more on technique and quality rather than quantity of moves.

Note: Descriptions of levels are inspired by advice given by top international lindy hop camps worldwide. The time frames are there as a guide only. There are always exceptions to every rule. The most useful piece of advice comes from Herrang (arguably the biggest and best of all the dance camps): Don’t be in a rush to get to advanced level. Self criticism is the most useful tool of any dancer. Master each level before you try to advance to the next.
